It seems Hilary Duff thinks holding a grudge against your ex is so yesterday.
On Oct. 30, Duff’s husband of five years, musician Matthew Koma, showed off his Halloween costume in an Instagram Story. According to multiple outlets that captured screenshots of the post, Koma dressed up as Duff’s ex-boyfriend, Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden.
Duff and Madden’s relationship would almost certainly be considered controversial today, but was largely glossed over by mainstream media at the time. The two began dating in 2004 when Duff was 16 and Madden was 25. They split in 2006, and a month later Madden began dating his future wife, “The Simple Life” alum Nicole Richie.
“What’s better than going as @joelmadden for a Halloween dinner with @joelmadden and @nicolerichie,” Koma wrote, alongside a photo of him decked out in Madden’s signature black attire, including an MDDN hat, a leather jacket and a chain necklace.
And in a second Instagram Story from Koma, it was quickly revealed that his getup was part of a couple’s costume with Duff, who was dressed as Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden ― Joel’s identical twin brother.
“Going as @benjimadden and @joelmadden to a Halloween dinner with @joelmadden and @nicolerichie,” Koma’s post read, alongside a photo of him in costume and Duff sporting all black, a chain necklace and a vest.
Richie appears to have appreciated the move, reposting a photo of Duff and Koma in costume and writing “Hehehe” at the bottom.

These days, Duff and Koma seem to be pretty chummy with Richie and Joel Madden, despite their messy pasts.
“We’re neighbors. And we actually hang out all the time,” Duff said on “Watch What Happens Live” in 2023. “I was just in [Richie’s] driveway honking for her to come drink wine with us the other day.”
